First Contact Practitioner (Physio)

What is an FCP

This First Contact Physiotherapist (FCP) role positions highly skilled and regulated Musculoskeletal (MSK) practitioners at the first point of contact in primary care. They have extensive experience in assessment and advice of musculoskeletal conditions. They see a wide range of problems such as joint, muscle or spinal pains.

This means that a patient presenting with an MSK condition can see an FCP at their first appointment, without seeing the GP first (provided they fit the criteria).  The FCP will provide their MSK assessment, triage, treatment plan and (where appropriate) investigations and referral, along with saving both time and resources within primary care teams. To do this the FCP will use advanced clinical skills and clinical reasoning.

This service is available for patients aged 16 and over.

What should you expect from your FCP?

Assessment and diagnosis of your problem and to be given expert advice on how best to manage your condition

Onwards referrals if required. This can include a referral to physiotherapy for continuing treatment, arrange diagnostic investigations if required.

The FCP will assess to identify RED flags, serious pathology and potential underlying non-MSK related disease that may present as MSK symptoms and refer appropriately.

How to book an appointment…

You can see us without the need for a GP appointment. Book directly by calling your own GP practice and ask to see the FCP

If you have symptoms in more than one area, please request two appointments.

Please note, FCP clinics are held at many practices across the Barnsley area, so please be prepared to travel for your appointments.
